Derived from the Sanskrit word meaning ‘a civilizational dimension’, NAGARIKA is an integrated information system on Indian physical traditions through technology and is the first such initiative in India in the field of traditional performing arts. The attempt is to showcase the various concepts of the body as well as the principles of movement underlying these traditions as articulated by masters of the form from a vantage point and worldview shaped by their particular paradigms and contexts.
The interactive DVD focuses on the Northern style of the martial art form Kalarippayattu and is the outcome of a three year research project 'Rediscovering the Kalarippayattu Spectrum' supported by Ford Foundation. The interactive DVD features students and masters of Hindustan Kalari, Choorakkody Kalari, C.V.N Kalari and EPV Kalari.
By providing a window to Kalarippayattu and its practitioners through the easily accessible format of an interactive DVD, it is hoped that artistes and practitioners will be able to delve into tradition and revitalise the form with new ideas, besides developing platforms for discussion and exploration on different aspects of the form.
