Derived from the Sanskrit word meaning ‘a civilizational dimension’, NAGARIKA is an integrated information system on Indian physical traditions through technology and is the first such initiative in India in the field of traditional performing arts. The attempt is to showcase the various concepts of the body as well as the principles of movement underlying these traditions as articulated by masters of the form from a vantage point and worldview shaped by their particular paradigms and contexts.
The interactive DVD focuses on the Northern style of the martial art form Kalarippayattu and is the outcome of a three year research project 'Rediscovering the Kalarippayattu Spectrum' supported by Ford Foundation. The interactive DVD features students and masters of Hindustan Kalari, Choorakkody Kalari, C.V.N Kalari and EPV Kalari.
By providing a window to Kalarippayattu and its practitioners through the easily accessible format of an interactive DVD, it is hoped that artistes and practitioners will be able to delve into tradition and revitalise the form with new ideas, besides developing platforms for discussion and exploration on different aspects of the form. Synchronous Objects in Bangalore
|
|
Goethe-Institut/Max Mueller Bhavan in collaboration with Attakkalari will present Synchronous Objects, an interactive screen-based work developed by William Forsythe, Maria Palazzi, and Norah Zuniga Shaw and a team of interdisciplinary collaborators at the Advanced Computing Center for the Arts and Design (ACCAD). The installation and public lectures (by Norah Zuniga Shaw) will be free and open to the public.

TRACES in Korea
|
|
Attakkalari in collaboration with Seoul based Dance Theatre CcadoO will be performing TRACES, a multimedia dance production in South Korea this September and October. The production is co-commissioned by InKo Centre with support from Arts Council Korea.

Storm at Attakkalari

Goethe-Institut/ Max Mueller Bhavan, Bangalore partnered with Attakkalari for the Opening Programme of the Germany and India 2011-2012: Infinite Opportunities celebrations held to commemorate the festivities of the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between India and Germany.
As part of its activities, Niels 'Storm' Robitzky, dancer-choreographer from Berlin gave a lecture-demonstration at Attakkalari on September 17th, 2011. Storm also conducted an exclusive workshop 'Storm breaks in Bangalore' for local dancers in collaboration with Attakkalari, the outcome of which was integrated into the opening programme performance held on September 24th at Bangalore. |

Nagarika at DFID
|
|
Artistic Director, Jayachandran Palazhy presented Attakkalari’s seminal research project NAGARIKA at the Digital Futures in Dance (DFID) National Conference, Pavillion Dance, Bournemouth, UK on September 9th.
Digital Futures in Dance is a platform to discuss future possibilities for dance and technology and also investigates how new digital technologies create new conditions for choreographing and presenting dance. The conference hosted over 20 international speakers and artists from Israel, Croatia, US, Germany, the UK and India.
Over Skype, Jayachandran Palazhy spoke about the process behind NAGARIKA -Kalarippayattu and answered questions from the audience. |

New Diploma batch begins!

At Attakkalari’s Diploma in Movement Arts & Mixed Media, 27 enthusiastic students began their first term on September 12th, 2011.This also includes two students visiting from Dance Company Frikar, Norway.
United by their passion for dance, young men and women from diverse backgrounds ranging from theatre to engineering and architecture have embarked on the first leg of this interesting and challenging journey! |
