Attakkalari announces Essence International

Essence International is a new initiative by Attakkalari Centre for Movement Arts, aimed at dancers with at least 2 years of experience to provide them with insights to become accomplished professional artists in the performing arts arena. Essence International invites practising dance artists from across the globe to Bengaluru (India) to get focused and advanced training as well as mentorship by experts in Contemporary Dance and other Movement Arts. Held in Bengaluru from 23 July to 7 August 2018, Essence International  classes will be held from Monday to Saturday by artists of global repute in different strands of Contemporary Dance, Ballet, Kalarippayattu, Yoga, Gyrokenesis and Feldenkrais Method. Participants will also be able to attend performances, seminars and other events at the “Body Matters- Move to Transform” festival celebrating Arts in Education, held in Bengaluru from 8-11 August 2018.
Participants can attend 75 classes in total for an attractive fee of INR 20,000/- for Indians or 500 Euros for non-Indians. You can opt for either the entire course or make up your own curriculum by selecting the modules of your choice and pay accordingly.
The weather in Bangalore is very pleasant and the city is well connected with air and surface travel modes. Attakkalari studios are furnished with wooden sprung dance floors and linoleum mats, situated in the heart of Bengaluru. The city has plenty of choices for accommodation and food.

Call out for a comprehensive light design certification programme

Here’s an opportunity for upcoming light designers, technicians and those interested in stage light designing to learn from light designer Back-Hee Ryou from Korea.
Hee Ryou made her first step into the Performing Arts as a theatre actress. After 6 years of career as an actress of Theatre Troup Georipae, she joined the lighting team of Jeongdong Theatre since 1998 and expanded her work as a lighting designer. She has worked with the Korean performing arts organizations such as the National Contemporary Dance Company, the National Theatre of Korea and the National Changgeuk Company of Korea. In 2018, she was the lighting director of the Pyeongchang Winter Paralympics.

Level 2
15 - 31 January 2019: Candidates who have done well and shown commitment to the field during the Level 1 course will get priority to join Level 2, which is linked to Attakkalari India Biennial 2019. This part will prepare the trainee technicians for the intricacies of setting up for an International Biennial Festival based on the tech riders of the visiting companies to Attakkalari India Biennial 2019.
01 – 10 February 2019: Participants will get an opportunity to apprentice with the tech team that will work alongside international artistes and stage technicians taking part at the Attakkalari India Biennial 2019.

The participants who complete the course successfully will receive their certificates at the end of the programme.

Contemporary Dance by
Lucia Vasquez

Learn floor work and sequences based in Release and Limon techniques, ending in a choreography infused with the teacher–trainer’s core techniques with award winning choreographer Lucia Vasquez. She has won multiple awards including the Best Female Dancer at Stage Awards of Seville in 2011 & 2014 and at the Andalusian Theatre Awards in 2013, and the 3rd Prize for co-directing “Flying Birds” at NDA International Festival 2017.

Stefano Fardelli

Explore the concepts of space, weight and fluidity: strike out in search of functional dynamics and deeper understanding of structure and unity in dance through combinations and sequences with choreographer teacher Stefano Fardelli who is also the artistic director of the international performing arts network, the Eur-Asia Dance Project. He teaches at several dance schools in Europe and creates projects for festivals, dance schools and companies and theatres worldwide.

Ballet and Gyrokinesis by
Stefano Peschuilli

Improve your muscular strength, flexibility and range of motion; boost coordination and correct body alignment through sessions in Ballet by dancer and teacher Stefano Peschuilli, who teaches and performs all over the world. Stefano has danced ensemble and soloist classical roles in National Theatre of Belgrade, Imperial Russian Ballet (Moscow) and others. He also has performed in acclaimed companies in neoclassical, modern and contemporary roles.

A certified teacher, Stefano in his Gyrokinesis sessions, uses gentle repetitive circling, spiralling and undulating exercises with a set rhythm to create sense of calm, wellbeing and mental clarity. Connective tissues are helped to maintain their suppleness by constant push- and -pull and simultaneously reaching opposite directions, creating internal balance and support.

Feldenkrais by Nina Haenal

Nina’s Contemporary Dance classes will focus on embodiment, dissemination, improvisation and composition while remaining in an inner state of playful attentiveness.
In her Feldenkrais Method sessions, through gentle directed attention, rediscover grace, efficiency, flexibility, coordination, ease and range of movement. Nina is a lecturer at the Centre for Contemporary Dance (CCD) of the University for Music and Dance in Cologne.

Attakkalari is coming to your city with auditions for its most popular and highly sought-after Diploma in Movement Arts & Mixed programme for this year as well. Those who have passed Plus 2 or equivalent qualifications are eligible to attend. Prior training is not required, but aptitude, commitment and a keen interest in dance as well as body and spatial awareness, coordination and musicality are some of the qualities we will be looking for in the candidates.
