Accolades from the other side of the globe

The Attakkalari Dance Company was on a one-month long tour in the cities of Spain and Canada with its ten member team led by the Artistic Director, Jayachandran Palazhy.  The Company was on a performance spree and presented their latest multimedia production - BhinnaVinyasa, rendered ancillary performances, workshops, masterclasses, lec-dems and ‘meet the artist’ sessions in the cities of Madrid, Valladolid and Burgos in Spain and Montreal, Halifax and Edmonto in Canada. The tour rendered an opportunity to perform at some of the prestigious venues, meet distinct personalities and artists, and also work closely with the local community. While the tour in Spain was fully supported by the ICCR, for the  Canadian leg of the tour, they were a goodwill partner. The tour in Canada was supported by the Canada Council along with local partners in each city – Festival Quartier Danses in Montreal, Live Art Dance in Halifax and Brian Web Dance Company in Edmonton and the Indian Embassies.

The performance of Bhinna Vinyasa in Spain was a very fulfilling experience, especially the one at the Teatros del Canal, Madrid which was house full show and later, the one in Burgos at a hospital for the mentally challenged, where the performance rendered a striking impact on the patients. Likewise, the performances in Canada too were very well received by the audience with several house full shows and the Company received a standing ovation at Cinquieme Salle at Place de Arts, Montreal.

The workshops proved to be an opportunity for the dancers to work closely with the local artists and community and resulted in an active exchange of movement dialogue and ideas. Alongside this, Jayachandran Palazhy, the Artistic Director of Attakkalari, also conducted workshops, masterclasses and interactive sessions for artists and students of various organisations and educational institutions in the various cities.

The ancillary performances included Bangalore Beats, Yashti, a piece choreographed by senior dancer and Rehearsal Director, Hemabharathy Palani and Urban Chaos, choreographer by Parth Bhardwaj, also a senior dancer.

Artist-in-Residence
Lina Gomez

Choreographer Lina Gomez will be at Attakkalari from 29th October as a part of the BangaloREsidency programme by the Goethe-Institut / Max Mueller Bhavan. A choreographer by profession Lina is interested in prompt endless transformations of the body which she wants to execute in her class and space, and also be aware of the specific quality of movement these transformations create. This is developed through involving both dancers and audience in a journey through images, textures and forms, playing with the experiences of feeling, seeing, hearing, and awakening the intensity and the insanity of the imagination. During her stay, Lina wishes to establish a common ground where all the singularities, different artistic approaches and diverse backgrounds of the participants could dialogue and give life to a collective and specific way of work. She aims to collect needs and wishes from the people involved in the process, which will be the fuel for the creation of a collective choreography.

The bangaloREsidency is a carefully curated long-term collaboration between the Goethe-Institut / Max Mueller Bhavan, Bangalore and various innovative and discerning contemporary art/ cultural spaces and partners in Bangalore like Attakkalari to involve mutual exchange so that both the visiting artists from Germany and the local community reap the benefit of fresh perspectives and expanding horizons.

Workshops Galore
The Thinking Body

Attakkalari regularly hosts workshops focussing on various movements, techniques and styles, led by an array of artists and choreographers from India and abroad. Held at the Attakkalari studios, these sessions are open to public and charged nominally. The purpose of these workshops is to acquaint the larger community with dance and techniques.

An exceptional performing artist, choreographer and teacher, Ronita Mookerji, will be leading a workshop - ‘The Thinking Body’, on exploring the movement dynamics of the body by inculcating elements such as space and energy in the movement sequence. Weaving in the distilled vocabularies of various danceforms and techniques, Ronita opens up a platform to explore, experiment and broaden one’s own skill-set of the Physical Body and the Thinking Body (mental capacity). The relationship and reference to the floor, the studio space and other moving/static bodies around will be the other layering of the class that will demand a higher understanding and experience of the mind-body connection, both as an internal and external framework and a myriad of play and cognitive learning through physical intelligence.
